This treatment will augment our ongoing hand harvesting program. The herbicide, ProcellaCOR EC, will control invasive Eurasian watermilfoil for multiple seasons in the treatment areas, but can have minimal impact on native plants. ProcellaCOR EC will be applied at less than 10 parts per billion. This rate is roughly equivalent to less than an ounce in a typical swimming pool and is significantly lower than for most other aquatic herbicides. The Program will be conducted by licensed biologists and technicians with the lake management firm SOLitude Lake Management, NYSDEC Pesticide Business Registration No.16505. The PLA will be filing our applications for permits to apply the herbicide with the NYDEC and APA shortly with plans to apply the herbicide between May 15 and June 30 2023. ProcellaCor applications to control in-lake invasive plants have no impact on public health, and there are no restrictions on swimming, fishing or potable/domestic water use (including turf watering) once the application is complete.
A restriction on all water uses in the treatment zone during the application will be in effect (approximately 2 hours per site) to prevent disruption to the application process. The product label for ProcellaCOR EC is available for review on Solitude Lake Management’s website http://www.solitudelakemanagement.com/product-labels-new-york. Costs and funding: More work is needed in 2023 (year 2 of the 3 year surge) to make the progress necessary to ensure a long term EWM reduction and this will be significantly more work than was conducted in 2022. Our expectation is that our contractor costs for hand harvesting will increase to $70,000 for 2023 and we will need to conduct the treatment with the aquatic herbicide mentioned above at the cost of approximately $60,000. We greatly appreciate the contributions many of you made to the PLA in 2022 to fund the EWM work. Unfortunately, we will not be able to conduct the required 2023 work with the level of funding we achieved in 2022. So the PLA will be looking at every fund raising avenue available to find substantial increases in funding this year. The Paradox Lake Association is the sole organization working to limit the spread of EWM in Paradox Lake and ensure that all lake users continue to have a positive experience on the lake.
