Nights are getting cooler, but Summer’s NOT OVER YET!

The lake is comfortably warm, the fish are jumping, loons continue to call (a lot) and the mosquitoes are mostly gone! This is definitely the best time of the summer here at Paradox. We could use some more rain, but we’ve had almost a couple of inches in the last few weeks so things are looking better.

Milfoil Update

Aqualogic has completed it’s contract with us for the summer. They, along with our many volunteers, made a major dent in our milfoil population this summer. On August 9, Bob Hauserman and Dan Gorke accompanied members of the APA to view and review our milfoil situation, in preparation for our application to use ProCellacor next spring. The meeting went well, according to Bob.

Join us at the Annual Business Meeting on ZOOM

The Board wants to avoid having public meetings on holiday weekends, because we figure you’re either busy with guests or opening or closing camp, so we are trying other dates. Since many members may have left the area by mid September, we decided to hold our Annual Business Meeting on ZOOM, on Tuesday, September 20 at 7 PM, so you can attend no matter where you are!

We hope you’ll be able to join us. We’ll be voting in our new Board members, and bringing you up to date on everything!

Annual Picnic and “Paddle for a Cause” a Major Success!

The Annual Picnic and Paddle for a Cause at Southwoods Camp was a real hit! Dee Dee Foran and her remarkable Fund Raising committee organized and ran the event which raised $10,000 for the PLA! Winners of the Paddle for a Cause were Tarrin Kuehner for the Intermediate group, and Bill Welch for the Novices. Congratulations Tarrin and Bill!

It was a very busy day. Raffle Prizes were distributed at the picnic to the winners, who had been notified of their winnings the prior week. Thank you to the Raffle Donors! Gretchen Sunderland set up an Invasives Weeds table to help attendees familiarize themselves with our local invasives. Steve Bluth, Owner and Director of Southwoods Camp, led a one hour tour of the camp for those who could brave the hill up, under the highway, and up again! Sandy and Terry Courneen of Paradox Thyme and their team of helpful volunteers served up a delicious BBQ lunch. Young and and not so young attendees enjoyed the wonderful inflatables in the water, and there were quite a few who enjoyed a cool dip in the lake. And we even had live music by the Adirondack Sound Dogs!

It was a beautiful day and a really fun afternoon. And we hope to repeat it next year! Thank you to Steve Bluth and Adam Kaufman, Director of 0perations, for opening up the camp for us and making us feel very welcome!

Meet a Milfoil Warrior!

She anchors the kayak to herself with a rope around her waist, and dumps the weeds into the bucket in her kayak.  Is she squeamish about the muck?  No, not really.  She steps through it carefully, avoiding sharp objects. Has she encountered snapping turtles, snakes, etc? No, not ever.  She does attract a leech every so often in the inlet creek, but they are easily removed. And she loves mucking!  Once she gets going, it’s hard to stop, she says.

Janice grew up on the lake, ever since her grandparents first bought their camp on Fraternaland Rd in the mid 1960s.  She cherishes the lake, enjoys getting out on the lake with a purpose, and wants to help keep it healthy and beautiful. 

As a newly retired math and science teacher, Janice is looking forward to spending more time at Paradox in the camp she’s enjoyed for so long.  She’s also an avid hiker, a winter and summer 46er, as well as a 115er.  That means she’s climbed the 115 peaks over 4000 ft in the Northeast!  Janice also makes Temari balls, a traditional Japanese craft, which she has donated to the PLA raffle in the last 2 years. Not one to do things lightly, Janice is a 3rd level certified member of the Japanese Temari Association, which means she can teach the craft too.

Go Janice! And thank you for all you do for Paradox Lake!

Craft Fair Successful Again

It was a beautiful hot day this year, and our booth at the Schroon Lake Craft Fair on July 23 was well attended, raising over $1,500 in membership dues, donations, sales of merchandise and a 50/50 raffle! Thank you to Teanna Fullen and Amanda Ragland for hosting the booth!

PLA in the News

On July 26, Aqualogic awarded the PLA a $7000 grant to assist in their integrated lake management/mitigation efforts for the milfoil growing in Paradox Lake. Over the past two years Aqualogic has provided $22,000 of grant funding to the PLA. Read all about it in The Sun article.
