Invasive Water Plants Update Aqualogic came in June and worked on Knox Road Beach (our newest milfoil outbreak in the Lower Lake), the Narrows, Grass Island, and Inlet Bay. They removed numerous gallons of milfoil over the five days they were here. Last week, Aqualogic dove for 5 days, beginning in the Narrows, then Grass Island and finished only about 1/3 of the Inlet Bay area before they had to leave. There is much left to remove there, as evidenced by the dozens of orange markers remaining. While Aqualogic will be back for more days of harvesting - we’ll let you know here and on our facebook group ( //www.facebook.com/groups/1635941669887761) - when we know when and where. As this is a time of high growth and fragmentation, we are calling for all volunteers to help us, especially now that milfoil is in both the Upper and Lower Lakes. Janice Miller and Gretchen Sunderland spent 2 days removing our other invasive plant, Curlyleaf Pondweed in the Granger/Daniels beach area in the Upper Lake. They may be coming to a shoreline near you for further pondweed removal; please welcome their efforts! Liz Reid, Janice, and Gretchen gave a training organized by Dee Dee Foran at Knox Road Beach and showed the 14 participants how to safely remove milfoil from their beach and to report number of plants pulled. There are many unsung heroes who work on removing milfoil every time they are at Paradox: Emery and Patty Dergosits, Jim and Kathleen Frederick, Susan and Langdon Brown, Bob Hauserman, Evan Glass, Nancy Girling, Dave and Laurie Gregory and I’m sure a few others that haven’t been mentioned here. What can you do? Learn to identify and mark milfoil. Pick up fragments – the plants are fragmenting heavily right now, and growing roots. Look for them on your shoreline. Learn to remove milfoil either with a hand-held cultivator or by snorkeling. If you’re a scuba diver, you can volunteer to remove the deeper plants (up to 15 feet) And if you’re unable to do any of the above, please donate to the PLA to help us try to manage these invasives. Those donations are helping to fund Aqualogic’s work which is now a crucial and necessary part of containing the milfoil in the lake.
