We welcome Jeanette Barth to the PLA Board
Jeanette is filling the Upper Lake Director position vacated by Bob Hauserman when he became Vice President. Thank you to Jeanette for stepping up and continuing her lifelong commitment to volunteering, which you can read about here. We are indeed lucky and grateful to have her on the Board! Invasives update At the recent Schroon Lake Town Board meeting, the Board acknowledged the Paradox Lake volunteers for their hard work at fighting aquatic invasives, and earmarked $6000 toward that work, a 50% increase over prior years’ contributions.
In our continued efforts to evaluate and rethink our approach to the invasives problem, we have consolidated the Lake Management and Invasives Committees of the Board. Current members of the combined Committee are Bob Hauserman, Nancy Girling, Tony Petrongolo, and Scott Randall. They are actively meeting with various agency and state officials and members of other lake associations to gather ideas and come up with a going forward strategy. We plan to provide more details of their process as it develops.
The NYS Dept of Environmental Conservation has released an excellent video “Uninvited: The Spread of Invasive Species”. Invasive species are defined as plants, animals, and pathogens that are nonnative to the Adirondacks AND cause harm either to the environment, human health or local economies. Without sufficient care and effort these species can become self-sustaining populations. The new video explains the impact many of these invasive species have on the Park, and on Paradox Lake, and why our collective efforts to keep these species out of our waters is so important. It’s worth watching, but a bit long, so throw an extra log on the fire one evening, and watch this video by clicking HERE. Loon Zooms The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation is offering a series of virtual lectures about loons on the second Thursday of each month at 7pm. To register for the Loon Zooms click HERE.
