Last year the photo at the head of this email was this:

This year, I took the top photo on Tuesday morning, April 19. The winter storm spread across much of northern NY, leaving in its wake close to 200,000 households without power. As of 1:00PM Wednesday, about 170,000 had been restored, but here in Paradox, the power went out at 3:30AM Tuesday morning, and was finally restored to all of Paradox Lake by midnight on Wednesday.

In other news, Ice Out on the Lower Lake was last Thursday, April 7, and Tuesday, April 12 on the Upper Lake. Daffodils are starting to peek out of the ground, and some loons are back and calling to each other, making our thoughts turn to summer!

Annual Picnic and “Paddle for a Purpose”

First, a correction: The Annual Picnic will be held on August 21 at Camp Southwoods Beach (not Southwinds, as reported in the last newsletter - very sorry for any confusion that might have caused) at 532 Route 74 in Paradox from 12pm to 4pm. Tours of the Camp will be available. The beach will be open for swimming and splashing. There will be a BYOB picnic with barbeque and hot dogs for the kids. And we’ll be having a “Paddle for a Purpose” Race to raise money for the PLA’s increased invasives efforts.

Invasives Update

The Invasives Committee is working on putting together the 2022 harvesting strategy, and is looking for more volunteers to help with scouting, hand harvesting, snorkeling and diving. We will be using a phone app that can be used to track both scouting and harvesting results to help manage the process in real time. We are aware that last minute calls for action may not work for many people and expect that there will be more advance planning and many fewer last minute calls than in prior years. If you can volunteer in any capacity, please send a note via the website by clicking on one or more of the “Invasives” buttons here.

2023 PLA Calendar Photos Needed

It’s never too early to start collecting photos for next year’s calendar. Dee Greer will be spearheading the calendar project this year and is looking for any photos of Paradox Lake in any season, with any wildlife, or even with people enjoying the Lake. A brief explanation of the picture and the month it was taken would be helpful, as well as the name of the photographer. Please send your photos and any questions to Dee at yankeedee23@gmail.com.

Help Still Needed

You’ve probably seen this before (in the last 2 newsletters!) but it bears repeating. Lake Stewards are still needed for our boat launch, and we are looking for a few good people interested in helping out the lake, either as volunteers or through the full-time paid Lake Steward role.

The Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) manages our Lake Steward program and is currently accepting applications for the Lake Steward role. Review their information here where you can also find a link to the application process. Please be aware that the PLA will also be looking for part time stewards to cover the hours not covered by AWI if you are interested in the Lake Steward role but not in a full time job. Additionally, if anyone is more comfortable volunteering (unpaid), you'd be welcomed too. Please go to the PLA website https://paradox-lake.com/sign-up-to-volunteer, and check the “Become a Lake Steward” box.

May is Membership Month!

Our annual month-long membership campaign will kick off again this year on May 1. This is when most of our membership revenue comes in. As previously communicated, your support is more important than ever this year to fund our ramped-up battle against invasives. Please watch your email around May 1 to renew your membership in PLA.

Telephone Directory

Since there were no responses to my plea for help with setting up a SquareSpace based directory, we will go ahead and create a not-so-secure spreadsheet that will be posted on the website in a section just for directory contributors. The spreadsheet will be searchable and sortable if you download it, and will be updated monthly if there are new members to add. The directory will only be for PLA members - but if you’re not a member, it is so easy to join: Just go to https://paradox-lake.com/take-action. Stay tuned for an email survey which will allow your to submit the information that you want to include in the directory.
