In fits and starts, Paradox Lake is freezing over. Last weekend's storm dropped about 7" of powder, and low nighttime temperatures have allowed the ice to form. It's really looking like a winter wonderland out there! And yesterday we spotted the first fisherman of the season out on the inlet bay!

On Dec 10, Governor Hochul of New York signed the Invasive Species Law which the legislature passed some time ago. The PLA supported the legislation when it was being developed, and we’re glad that it will help us in the fight against invasives in our lake. In case you missed it, you can find the article here.

You may have seen the recent article in the Adirondack Explorer about Harmful Algal Blooms. It listed Paradox, among several other lakes, as having had reported algal blooms. There were 2 such blooms reported to the DEC, one this summer and one in the fall, both in the upper lake. Neither was tested, so they were not confirmed to be harmful, but, at least in photographs, they were thought to be of the harmful variety. We’ve posted a picture of the second bloom on our website, along with several articles and the DEC registry link. You can find it all here.

We want to take this opportunity to thank all the people that make our lake the wonderful and special place it is. We wanted to list all of the volunteers who helped spot, mark, and pull invasive aquatic plants, send out mailings, calendars and notecards, work on the picnic , donate raffle prizes, set up and dismantle the boat wash station, craft fair, and rafffle, fill in to staff the boat launch inspection station, and more. It took close to 100 people to do all that and we are all grateful for your efforts. A heartfelt thank you to all of our dedicated volunteers!

And we want to thank all of our members for the financial support you have shown the PLA this past year. Despite our having to cancel our golf outing again this year, you have been generous with your contributions, and helped us continue our work to preserve and protect our lake. A heartfelt thank you goes to our members and contributors!

In light of the growing complexity of managing the invasives situation on the lake, our newly enlarged Invasives Committee is working on a new strategic process for this work. Our President Dan Gorke will be writing to you early in the new year to let you know where we’re headed, why, and how.
