The lake is comfortably warm, the fish are jumping, loons are calling and the mosquitoes are still biting, well into August! That’s what a very rainy July can do! And now 3 days of rain are raising water levels again, not as high as July yet, and hopefully not raising another batch of mosquitoes! Annual Business Meeting RescheduledEssex County has returned to a mask mandate in all county government buildings. This, along with other developments with Covid, has led us to change the Annual Membership Meeting to a virtual Zoom format, and to change the date to: Tuesday, September 14, at 7 PM We hope you’ll be able to join us. We’ll be voting on our new Board members, and bringing you up to date on milfoil collection efforts, finances, fund raising efforts, and plans for the future. Zoom details and instructions will be mailed closer to the date. Milfoil UpdateWe have completed our original contract with Aqualogic for this year, and there is still significant Milfoil in many parts of the lake. Our volunteer divers, spotters, scouts, and harvesters have been working hard, but it’s been difficult to keep up with the growth and spread of this invasive weed. Therefore, thanks to your generous donations, the Board was able to approve an additional $6200 for an additional week of Aqualogic harvesting in September. A new area of milfoil was discovered in Smith Bay in the lower lake in early August. Within a couple of days, Liz Reid and Gretchen Sunderland organized a training for new volunteers to identify, mark, and remove plants. The new volunteers have already spent many hours in the area. Another training is scheduled for August 21. Aqualogic is planning to inspect the area upon their return, to develop their plan of attack. We as a Board and as members of the PLA heartily thank all the volunteers who have and are giving their precious time at the lake to keeping our lake beautiful and open for swimming, boating, fishing and other activities. Thank you to all the volunteers who braved the weather to host the booth! Our 50/50 raffle winner, Steve McIntyre, donated his winnings back to the PLA. Thank you Steve! Annual Picnic Both Safe and FunThe Annual Picnic was a big success, thanks to a large group of volunteers who bought, cooked, and served the refreshments in a manner appropriate to the current times. And thanks to the volunteers who set up the tent, not an easy feat! In addition to the picnic fun, the PLA made $530 in sales of merchandise, membership dues and a 50/50 raffle, won by Lindy McClary, who turned around and donated half of the winnings back to the PLA. Thank you Lindy! Nancy Girling gave a report on the current Milfoil harvesting situation, and Gretchen and Janice Miller demonstrated identifying and harvesting of the plants to a group of very interested members. Paradox Lake Loon Chick RescueOn July 30, PLA members Ellie and Cal George joined with the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation to rescue a loon chick on the lower lake that had been entangled in fishing line.
