Harmful Algal Blooms

Algal Bloom found on Paradox Upper Lake, Fall 2021

Algal Blooms have started appearing in a number of Adirondack Lakes. Possible causes for their recent appearances include high phosphate fertilizers, leaking septic systems, and warming water temperatures. While Algae are normal natural plants, excessive growth can be harmful, and sometimes toxic to humans and animals. There have been 2 reports of Algal Blooms at Paradox, both this year, but neither was sampled and tested, so we cannot confirm that they were harmful blooms.
